Obituary for Dixie Lee Handlon (Kearnes)

Dixie Lee (Day) Handlon, age 75, passed away peacefully at her home on December 16, 2017.
Dixie was born in Trenton, New Jersey on November 22, 1942. Raised by her grandparents, she learned how to cook in their family owned restaurant. At age 32, she graduated nursing school in Glasgow, Kentucky. Throughout her 32 year nursing career, she taught CNA classes in Louisiana, was president of the Ladies Auxiliary in Germany, and traveled throughout the world. She eventually retired from Fort Knox Internal Medicine and has resided on the Mississippi Gulf Coast since 2007. Dixie was a friend to everyone and loved her fur-babies, flowers, and crafting.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marcella June Welch and Robert Kearnes.
Dixie is survived by her beloved husband, James S. Handlon; her daughter, Kyleen Creekmore (Mel;) her sons, Rick Day and David Day (Lora;) her sisters, Patty Montoya and Penny Hylan; 7 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, and her godson, Donald Thompson.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 22, 2017, at 4pm at Southern Mississippi Funeral Services in Ocean Springs, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to the VFW Post 6731 or to the Jackson or Harrison County Humane Society.
