Evalyn W. Jerkins, Ph.D. (1939-2018)
Evalyn passed into the light January 9th with her husband, Doug, by her side. Evalyn and Doug had enjoyed 33 years of Wedded Bliss.
Evalyn worked in education most of her life starting in Memphis, TN, then to Hanau, Germany, Mineral Wells, TX, Pascagoula, Moss Point, Ocean Springs, Spartanburg, SC and Pawling, NY. She was the first female superintendent in South Carolina. She lived and grew up in Corinth, MS and graduated from Corinth High School. She went on to earn an Associates of Arts degree from Virginia Intermont College, Bristol, VA. Her B.A. degree from Ole Miss, Masters from the University of South Alabama and her Ph. D. from the University of Southern Mississippi.
Evalyn was preceded in death by her father Bonner Whitten and her mother Dortha Kirkland Whitten.
She is survived by her husband Doug Jerkins, sister Bonna Whitten-Stovall (Rick) of Toronto, Canada; daughter LeeAnne Simmons(David) of Los Gatos, CA; grandson Aaron Simmons of Santa Barbara, CA and granddaughter Amanda Simmons of Los Gatos, CA; beloved Stepdaughter Stephanie Jerkins Morgan (Jay) and grandson Jayden Morgan of Starkville, MS and granddaughter Kylie Morgan of Gautier, MS; beloved stepson Joel Jerkins (Vanessa) of Abingdon, VA; granddaughters Lena Sue Jerkins of Knoxville, TN and Kristen Abdel Messih of Abingdon, VA; special " sister in law" Sandra Jerkins Maggard (John) and Brenda Jerkins both from Pascagoula, MS; her special niece Christi Busby of Katy, TX.
